The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the Jersey Shore, including Atlantic, Cape May, Burlington, and Ocean Counties, effective until 7 p.m. tonight (March 16). Residents in these areas should remain alert as dangerous thunderstorms are expected to sweep across New Jersey this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, storms may begin as early as 2 p.m., peaking between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. from west to east. The primary threat is strong winds, but the risk of tornadoes is increasing. Gusty winds ranging from 35 to 50 mph are anticipated, with scattered tree damage and power outages possible. Over 4,700 homes and businesses were already without power as of 7:30 a.m. today.

Forecasters warn that the storms could include isolated supercells—intense, rotating thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall is also expected, with totals ranging from three-quarters of an inch to 1.5 inches, leading to potential flash flooding. Temperatures will rise to the mid-60s to low 70s inland, while coastal areas will experience cooler temperatures around 60 degrees.

The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory from 2 p.m. today through 2 a.m. Tuesday for most of New Jersey.

As the cold front moves through, much colder and drier weather is expected on Tuesday, with high temperatures in the mid-30s to mid-40s. Winds will remain gusty, reaching up to 30 to 35 mph. The weather is expected to moderate by late in the week, with seasonable temperatures returning by Thursday and Friday.

Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the severe weather unfolds.
