Governor Mikie Sherrill has nominated Jeanne Hengemuhle as the first woman to lead the New Jersey State Police. Hengemuhle, 55, will become Acting Superintendent on Thursday (February 26) while awaiting Senate confirmation. She retired in 2024 as a lieutenant colonel after 26 years of service.

Hengemuhle, a Monroe Township resident, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating she will lead with the State Police's core values of "Honor, Duty, and Fidelity." Her nomination marks a historic moment as she is also the first openly gay person to hold this position.

Governor Sherrill praised Hengemuhle as a "dedicated public servant" with vast experience. Sherrill stated, "Jeanne understands not only the responsibilities of the job but also the profound duty to serve and protect our communities each and every day."

Hengemuhle's appointment comes amid ongoing challenges within the New Jersey State Police, including scandals and allegations of racial disparities. According to the New Jersey Globe, investigations have highlighted issues such as racial profiling and bias in promotions, prompting calls for reform.

Hengemuhle will replace Dave Sierotowicz, who served as acting superintendent following Patrick Callahan's retirement. Her first tasks will include addressing the status of controversial Deputy Superintendent Sean Kilcomons and overseeing ongoing reforms.

The nomination has received support from various officials and organizations, including the State Troopers Fraternal Association. Wayne Blanchard, the association's president, commended Hengemuhle's dedication and professionalism during her career.

Hengemuhle's background includes serving as a branch commander overseeing recruitment and training strategies. She holds degrees from The College of New Jersey and is a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame for her softball achievements.

The Senate will review her nomination, and if confirmed, Hengemuhle will formally assume the title of Superintendent.
