A powerful coastal storm is expected to hit New Jersey this weekend, potentially bringing significant snowfall, dangerous winds, and coastal flooding to areas still recovering from last weekend's winter weather.

The storm system could arrive as early as Saturday evening, with the most severe conditions expected Saturday night through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

"While confidence in specific forecast details remains low, the storm could bring at least portions of the area moderate to significant impacts from snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding," the National Weather Service said Wednesday (January 28).

The Jersey Shore faces the highest risk, with forecasters predicting northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph that could gust up to 50 mph along coastal areas. These powerful winds could cause damage, power outages, and push water onto shore communities, creating significant flooding concerns.

Snow probabilities vary based on location, with chances for accumulations greater than 2 inches ranging from around 40% near the I-95 corridor to 50% near the Jersey Shore. For 6 or more inches of snow, probabilities reach approximately 30% near I-95 and 40% along the coast.

The storm's exact track remains uncertain and will determine its ultimate impact. AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok noted, "How fast the storm strengthens will be a determining factor in the final track of the storm this weekend and whether or not it moves up the East Coast."

If the system tracks along the East Coast, New Jersey could face another weekend of significant snow removal efforts. A track farther east off the coast would decrease the snow threat but could still bring strong winds and coastal flooding.

The timing of the storm coincides with Sunday's full moon, which further increases coastal flooding concerns.

Making matters worse, the storm arrives during a period of dangerously cold temperatures across New Jersey. Wind chills are expected to plunge to minus 10 to minus 15 degrees across much of the state tonight, with the coldest values near minus 20 degrees in higher elevations.

The National Weather Service has extended a cold weather advisory through Thursday morning for most of New Jersey, noting that this combination of prolonged arctic cold is rare for the region and should be taken seriously.

By Sunday evening, the storm is expected to rapidly move northeast, with generally tranquil but cold weather returning for early next week.

Residents throughout New Jersey, especially those in coastal communities, are advised to monitor forecast updates as the weekend approaches and prepare for potential winter storm impacts.
