Communities along the Jersey Shore are urgently seeking funds for beach replenishment after a recent nor'easter caused severe erosion. In Ocean City, entire dunes were washed away, prompting city officials to work with Congressman Jeff Van Drew to secure additional funding. Van Drew has called on the federal government for help, asking the Army Corps of Engineers to activate its disaster recovery authority. He highlighted the combined damage from the nor'easter and Hurricane Erin in August, which also caused significant erosion.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reported "notable erosion" along the coast, especially south of Manasquan Inlet. Despite a $73 million beach replenishment effort in Northern Ocean County this summer, much of the sand has already been lost. Congressman Van Drew is advocating for permanent and reliable funding for beach projects nationwide, proposing legislation to create a trust fund from revenues generated by Outer Continental Shelf projects. He emphasized the importance of stable funding to keep costs down and ensure the protection of coastal communities.

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian expressed confidence in the upcoming beach replenishment cycle, scheduled for early 2026. He noted the importance of replenishment for public safety and insurance purposes. Cape May Mayor Zach Mullock also stressed the necessity of beach replenishment, stating that the city would have no beaches without it.

Van Drew's efforts to secure funding are supported by local officials, who recognize the vital role beaches play in the local economy and public safety. The proposed legislation aims to provide a more predictable and stable funding source, allowing for proactive measures to protect the coastline. As the bill progresses through Congress, Van Drew remains committed to fighting for the resources needed to safeguard the Jersey Shore.
