Cody, a cherished American black bear at the Cape May County Park and Zoo, has died at the age of 20. The zoo's veterinarian staff euthanized Cody due to his declining health from old age. Cody had been a resident of the zoo since 2005, after being rescued as a young bear.
The zoo announced Cody's passing on Tuesday (May 6), highlighting his laid-back personality and love for peanut butter snacks, swimming, and napping in the shade. He was particularly known for giving zookeepers "high fives" and following them around, bringing joy to their days. "No matter what kind of day a keeper had, he always put a smile on their face," the zoo shared in a statement.
Cody's presence at the zoo will be missed by both staff and visitors. His memory will remain a significant part of the zoo's history. The Cape May County Park and Zoo, located in Middle Township, New Jersey, is a free attraction that has been home to Cody for the past two decades.
