Wildwood is implementing significant security upgrades to its boardwalk to enhance visitor safety. The city announced the installation of bollards at all potential vehicular entry points to prevent unauthorized vehicles from accessing pedestrian areas. These short, sturdy posts aim to protect against both accidental and intentional vehicle-ramming attacks. Removable bollards will also be placed at selected access ramps.
In addition to the bollards, new lighting has been installed along the entire boardwalk, stretching from 26th Street to Burke Avenue. State-of-the-art security cameras have been added to improve surveillance and monitor potential threats. Deputy Mayor Steve Mikulski stated, "While we acknowledge that vulnerabilities cannot be completely eliminated, these targeted enhancements are designed to significantly deter potential threats and mitigate the impact of any incidents."
The security upgrades follow a tragic vehicle attack in New Orleans earlier this month that resulted in the deaths of 15 people and injuries to dozens more. Wildwood officials expect the security measures to be completed before the 2025 beach season, with additional enhancements planned for Robert Avenue by the fall.
The city has not disclosed the cost of the project, which is being funded through various sources. Wildwood's boardwalk attracts millions of visitors each year, making these security improvements crucial for ensuring public safety.
