In Cape May County parts of the Delaware Bay have frozen over due to the recent bitter cold. Large chunks of ice are washing up along the shore, creating a rare sight in the area. Climatologist David Robinson noted that such ice formations have not been common in recent decades. He also mentioned that this January is shaping up to be the coldest in New Jersey since 2014.
The cold weather has been a significant factor in the ice formation. According to NJ.com, while the snowfall in New Jersey has been close to average, the cold temperatures have been more extreme. The Atlantic City area, for example, has received six inches of snow this winter, slightly below its normal total of 7.2 inches by late January.
The Rutgers Climate Institute reported that December 2024 had higher atmospheric pressure than any month in over 40 years, contributing to the cold conditions. Despite some precipitation, the state still faces a precipitation deficit.
