Netflix is advancing its plans to build a large production facility in New Jersey. On Monday (December 16), the Eatontown Planning Board approved the company's site plans for the first phase of the project at Fort Monmouth, a former Army base in Monmouth County. This follows the Oceanport Planning Board's approval last month, despite concerns about traffic and noise.
The $903 million project will transform the 289-acre site into a film and television production studio. The initial phase includes four soundstages, each 22,000 square feet, along with production support offices and other facilities. The NJ.com reports that the Eatontown site plans also include roadway improvements and landscaping.
Governor Phil Murphy has supported the project, highlighting its potential to create jobs and boost the state's film industry. Netflix is also seeking a tax incentive under New Jersey's Aspire program, which could cover up to 50% of the project's cost. The Real Estate NJ notes that the New Jersey Economic Development Authority will consider this request soon.
Construction is expected to start in late 2025 or early 2026, pending further approvals from the Monmouth County Planning Board. Once completed, the studio will feature 12 soundstages, office buildings, and other amenities, potentially becoming Netflix's East Coast headquarters. Patch.com reports that the entire project must be completed within eight years from the deal's closure.
