New Jersey Transit has announced that it will offer refunds for unused one-way bus, rail, and light rail tickets purchased before June 1, 2024. The refund policy will also apply to rail 10-trip tickets, which are equivalent to 10 one-way rail tickets bought in a single transaction. The refund requests will be accepted from August 1 through December 31, 2024. However, tickets purchased on or after June 1, 2024, must be used by July 31, 2024, and will not be eligible for refunds.
The new one-way ticket policy was first announced as part of NJ Transit's fare adjustment proposal on January 24, 2024, and was approved by NJ Transit's Board of Directors at the April board meeting. The policy is expected to significantly reduce the opportunity for fraud, saving NJ Transit an estimated $25 million annually. All one-way tickets, including rail ten-trip tickets, will be valid for 30 days, including the date of purchase, starting from July 1, 2024.
NJ Transit has urged customers to avoid purchasing any additional one-way tickets that they cannot use by July 31, 2024. The agency remains committed to ensuring customers are compensated for any unused one-way or rail ten-trip tickets in their possession that were purchased before June 1, 2024.
